Exam tip: 20 seconds, three steps

Twenty seconds is about two or three sentences.

Strategy notes

Twenty seconds is about two or three sentences. That is enough to pass, if every sentence does a job. Use the same three steps every time:

  1. React (1–2 seconds). Show you understood the situation: Wat vervelend! · Goed idee! · Gefeliciteerd! · Natuurlijk.
  2. Do the task (the main sentence). Listen for the action word in the question:
  • Geef advies → Als ik jou was, zou ik… · Je kunt beter… · Ik raad je aan om… te…
  • Vraag → Zou u… kunnen…? · Kunt u…? · Mag ik…?
  • Leg uit → Eerst… Daarna… Dan…
  • Reageer / Wat zeg je? → answer the question directly.
  1. Add a reason or a detail. …omdat…, …want…, Dan… One reason is enough.

Who are you talking to? Decide in one second: a doctor's assistant, a manager you don't know well, the gemeente → u. A friend, a neighbour you know, a colleague → je/jij.

Don't wait for the perfect sentence. Start speaking at the beep with your reaction phrase: it buys you two seconds of thinking time. If you can't find a word, say it another way (het ding waarmee je…).

Practise with a timer. Record yourself on your phone, 20 seconds, then listen back: did you do the task? Did you give a reason?

Open task: Spreken: drie korte opdrachten

How it works: the student records each answer (phone or the iOS app), 20 seconds per task, without preparing on paper first, and sends the recordings to the teacher. The model answers are shown after recording.

Prompt A · Advies geven

Je buurvrouw wil Nederlands leren, maar ze heeft weinig tijd. Geef haar een advies.

Model answer: Wat goed dat je Nederlands wilt leren! Ik raad je aan om elke dag tien minuten met een app te oefenen. Dat kost weinig tijd, en je kunt het gewoon in de bus doen.

Prompt B · Iets vragen (formeel)

Checklist (yes/no, per recording):

  1. Did you do what the task asked (advice, a request, an explanation)?
  2. Did you start with a short reaction or greeting?
  3. Did you give a reason or a detail (omdat, want, dan, bijvoorbeeld)?
  4. Did you finish within 20 seconds, in two or three sentences?
  5. Did you choose the right form: u for the library, je for the neighbour and the colleague?
  6. Is the verb in the right place (second in a main clause, at the end after omdat/als/dat)?
  7. Did you keep talking without long silences?

Exam focus

Component · Spreken (computer, headphones and microphone, about 25 minutes)

  • Task type · Korte spreekopdrachten (short speaking tasks)
  • What the real task looks like · Programma I has 8 short tasks and 8 medium-length tasks. In a short task you hear (and often see, with a picture or a short video) a situation and a question. After a beep you have 20 seconds to speak. The question is played once. Typical actions: answer a question, react to news, give advice, ask for something politely, explain something briefly. Two trained examiners score whether you did what the task asked, and how well (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency).
  • Most common mistakes · 1. Doing the wrong action: giving your opinion when the task asks for advice, or telling a story when it asks for a request. · 2. Answering in one word ("Ja.", "De bus.") with no reason or detail. · 3. Starting a long story and being cut off before the actual answer. · 4. The wrong form of address: je to the doctor's assistant, u to your friend. · 5. Long silences at the start.
