Exam tip: 30 seconds, one route

Thirty seconds is four or five sentences.

Last updated: 10/31/2026

Strategy notes

Thirty seconds is four or five sentences. The examiners want to hear that you did the task (you really chose, compared or gave an opinion) and that your answer hangs together. Use one route for every long task, so you never have to think about structure:

  1. Say your choice or opinion first. Ik kies voor… · Ik ben voor dit plan. · Ik ben tegen… Never start by describing the pictures.
  2. Give two reasons. Ten eerste… omdat… · Daarnaast… Make each reason concrete: a price, a time, a person, an example from your own life.
  3. Mention the other option. …is ook leuk, maar… · In vergelijking met… is… · …is net zo… als… This shows you compared, and it is where your comparatives score.
  4. Close. Alles bij elkaar kies ik dus voor… · Wat mij betreft… If the question is hypothetical, use als … zou: Als het regende, zou ik naar het museum gaan.

Prepare frames, not texts. You can't predict the topics, but you can make the frames automatic. Say them out loud until they come without thinking: Ik kies voor … omdat … . … is ook goed, maar … . Daarom …

Pictures: name the option in a word or two (de fiets, de bus), then move on to your reasons. The examiners can see the pictures too.

Time: if the beep cuts you off in the middle of your second reason, your answer was too slow at the start. Practise with a 30-second timer until your choice is out within the first three seconds.

Open task: Spreken: kiezen, vergelijken, mening

How it works: the student records each answer, 30 seconds per task, with no more than 10 seconds of thinking time, and sends the recordings to the teacher. The model answers are shown after recording.

Prompt A · Kiezen

Prompt B · Vergelijken

Checklist (yes/no, per recording):

  1. Did you give your choice or opinion in the first sentence?
  2. Did you give two reasons, each with a concrete detail or example?
  3. Did you mention the other option or the other side (…ook…, maar…; in vergelijking met…)?
  4. Did you end with a short conclusion (alles bij elkaar…, daarom…, wat mij betreft…)?
  5. Did you finish within 30 seconds, without long silences?
  6. Is the verb at the end after omdat, als and dat (Ik vind dat het plan goed is)?
  7. Did you use at least one comparison (…er dan…, net zo … als, het … -st)?

Exam focus

Component · Spreken (computer, headphones and microphone, about 25 minutes)

  • Task type · Middellange spreekopdrachten (medium-length speaking tasks). At B1 these 30-second tasks are the longest tasks in the exam.
  • What the real task looks like · After the 8 short tasks, Programma I has 8 medium-length tasks with 30 seconds of speaking time each. You hear (and often see) a situation, sometimes with two or three pictures, and you give an answer of "a few sentences or more": make a choice and explain it, compare, give advice with reasons, describe a situation or a sequence, or give and support an opinion. The question is played once; a beep starts the speaking time. Programma I has no 2-minute task; that one is only in Programma II (B2).
  • Most common mistakes · 1. Describing all the pictures but never actually choosing. · 2. Giving one reason with no explanation ("…omdat het leuk is."). · 3. Repeating the question for ten seconds before answering. · 4. Running out of time before the conclusion. · 5.
