Exam tip: a short text in three parts

The korte schrijftaak is not a creative writing test.

Strategy notes

The korte schrijftaak is not a creative writing test. The examiners first check one thing: did you cover every point? Only then do they look at grammar, vocabulary and how well the text hangs together. So plan before you type.

1. Number the points (1 minute). Read the assignment and number every point you must cover. Many assignments have four or five. Write the numbers down on your scrap paper and tick them off later.

2. Use three parts (2 minutes of planning).

  • Inleiding (1–2 sentences): who you are or why you write, and what the text is about. Write it so that someone who never saw the assignment still understands it.
  • Kern (one short paragraph per point or per two points): give each point a sentence plus a reason or an example. Omdat, want and bijvoorbeeld do the work here.
  • Slot (1–2 sentences): a conclusion, a wish, an idea or a question. In an e-mail, add a greeting.

3. Signpost with connecting words. Ten eerste … Daarnaast … Tot slot … for a list; Aan de ene kant … aan de andere kant … for pros and cons. These words take the first position in the sentence, so the verb comes next: Daarnaast *kan** ik thuis rustiger werken.*

4. Keep it simple and correct. Short, correct sentences score better than long, broken ones. Use words you are sure of; the dictionary is for checking, not for finding fancy words.

5. Check (last 3–5 minutes). Points ticked off? Verb in second place after a connector? Verb at the end after omdat, als, dat? Capital letters and full stops?

Open task: reactie op een plan

Exam-style prompt (shown to the student in Dutch):

Je werkt op een kantoor in Utrecht. Je leidinggevende wil dat alle medewerkers vanaf volgend jaar twee dagen per week thuiswerken. Hij vraagt iedereen om een korte reactie voor het teamoverleg.

Schrijf een tekst van ongeveer 120–150 woorden. Schrijf over:

- wat je van het plan vindt;

- een voordeel van thuiswerken;

- een nadeel van thuiswerken;

- hoe je werkdag nu is, in vergelijking met het plan;

- een idee om het plan beter te maken.

Je hebt 25 minuten.

Model answer (shown after submitting):

Karim El Amrani

Checklist (yes/no, for the student and the teacher):

  1. Did you write about all five points?
  2. Does the text have an introduction, a middle part and an ending?
  3. Did you use at least three connecting words (for example ten eerste, daarnaast, aan de ene/andere kant, omdat, tot slot)?
  4. After a connector at the start of a sentence, is the verb in second place (Daarnaast kan ik…)?
  5. After omdat, als and dat, is the verb at the end?
  6. Did you work out each point (uitwerken) with a reason or an example? Can someone who hasn't read the assignment understand your text?
  7. Did you write in your own words, at about 120–150 words?

Exam focus

Component · Schrijven (computer, 100 minutes in total)

  • Task type · Korte schrijftaak (short writing task). The structure skills also help in the deelschrijftaak.
  • What the real task looks like · Programma I has 8 zinstaken (one or two sentences each), 2 deelschrijftaken (forms, short parts of a text) and 2 korte schrijftaken. A korte schrijftaak gives you a situation and a list of points: you write an e-mail, a short report, a description or a reaction that covers all the points. Most situations are about work or education; some are about daily life. You choose the order of the tasks yourself. A paper NT2 pocket dictionary is allowed. Plan about 20–25 minutes per korte schrijftaak.
  • Most common mistakes · 1. Forgetting one of the points. Missing content costs more than a grammar mistake. · 2. No introduction or ending: the text starts in the middle and stops suddenly. · 3. Only "en … en … en": no connecting words, so the reader can't follow the reasoning. · 4. Word order after a connector: Daarnaast ik vind → Daarnaast vind ik; and after omdat/als/dat, the verb goes to the end. · 5. Copying whole sentences from the assignment, or writing a text that only makes sense if you have read the assignment.
