Exam tip: choosing, explaining and telling a story

Last updated: 10/31/2026

Strategy notes

Part 3: choose and explain. Use this frame:

  1. Choice: Ik kies de fiets. (first sentence, always)
  2. Reason 1: …omdat het goedkoop is.
  3. Reason 2: Het voordeel is ook dat ik buiten ben. or Bovendien… (if you know it) or simply En…
  4. A small "but": Het nadeel is de regen. Maar dat vind ik niet erg.

Four sentences, about 30–40 seconds. Compare with a comparative if you can: De bus is sneller, maar de fiets is goedkoper.

Part 4: tell a picture story. Look at all three pictures before you start. Then tell one or two sentences per picture with order words:

  • Eerst… (picture 1) · Daarna / Dan / Vervolgens… (picture 2) · Tot slot / Aan het eind… (picture 3)

Tell the story in the present tense ("Vertel wat er gebeurt"): it is simpler and correct. If the question asks "Wat is er gebeurd?", use the perfectum. Pick one tense and stay in it. Add a feeling at the end: Ze is blij. Gelukkig!

Opinion questions. Ik vind dat… · Volgens mij… · Ik denk dat… + a reason (omdat) + a small example (bijvoorbeeld…). If you are not sure, you can still give an opinion: Ik denk het wel, omdat… Use zou for a "what would you do" question: Ik zou de trein nemen.

Keep going. If you get stuck, describe what you see: who, where, what they do. That always counts.

Open task

Students look at the prompt, take 10 seconds to think, record their answer (about 30–60 seconds), listen back and tick the checklist. Pro students send the recordings to their teacher. Image briefs for the design team are in italics.

Prompt 1 · Kiezen. Uw vriend wordt dertig. Wat geeft u hem? Plaatje A: een boek.

De man schrikt. Nu moet hij een taart kopen bij de bakker.

Prompt 3 · Mening. Wat vindt u: woont u liever in een grote stad of in een dorp? Waarom?

Model answer: Ik woon liever in een dorp. Het is daar rustiger en veiliger voor kinderen, en je kent je buren. Het voordeel van een stad is natuurlijk dat er veel winkels en werk zijn. Maar ik vind de natuur belangrijker. Ik zou bijvoorbeeld graag in een dorp bij de Veluwe wonen.

Checklist (yes/no), for each recording

  1. Part 3: did I say my choice in the first sentence?
  2. Part 3 and opinion: did I give at least two reasons (omdat, want, het voordeel is…)?
  3. Part 4: did I tell all three pictures, in the right order?
  4. Part 4: did I use order words (eerst, daarna, vervolgens, tot slot)?
  5. Did I stay in one tense in the story?
  6. Did I speak for about 30–60 seconds without long silences?
  7. Is the verb in the right place after omdat, als and dat (at the end)?

Exam focus

Component: Spreken. Task type: choose and explain (part 3), tell a picture story (part 4), and give your opinion.

  • Real task: on the computer, 35 minutes in total. Secondary sources describe part 3 as "choose one of two pictures and explain your choice" and part 4 as "tell what happens in three pictures". Each answer is recorded; roughly a minute per answer.
  • What the examiner checks: did you choose clearly, give reasons, tell all three pictures in order, and can a Dutch listener follow you?

Most common mistakes

  1. Not saying the choice clearly ("Ja, de fiets is ook leuk, en de bus…") so the examiner doesn't know what you chose.
  2. A choice without a reason, or a reason without omdat/want.
  3. In the story: describing only picture 1, or telling the pictures out of order.
  4. Switching between present and past in one story ("Ze loopt… toen kwam… ze heeft…").
  5. Repeating the same sentence pattern ("En dan… en dan… en dan…").
