Exam tip A2 inburgering: forms and short notes

Last updated: 10/28/2026

Strategy notes

Forms. Read the whole form before you write. Use capital letters for names if the form asks for "blokletters". Write dates as day-month-year: 14-02-1995. A Dutch postcode has four numbers and two letters: 6511 AB. Under "Woonplaats" write only the town; the street and house number go under "Adres". For a tick box, put a clear cross (☒) in one box only. If a field asks for a sentence ("Waarom wilt u deze cursus volgen?"), write one or two full sentences, not one word.

Short notes. Usually note have four parts:

  1. Greeting: Beste Mark, / Hoi Mark, (informal) · Geachte heer, mevrouw, (formal)
  2. Why you write: Ik geef zaterdag een feestje. / Ik ben ziek.
  3. What you want or offer: Kunt u…? / Heb je tijd…?
  4. Closing: Groeten, + your name (informal) · Met vriendelijke groet, + your name (formal)

Tick the task. Before you write, number the points in the task (1, 2, 3). After you write, check each number. The examiner checks task completion first: a short note with all three points beats a long note with two.

Keep it simple. Short sentences you are sure of. Link them with en, maar, want, dus. Remember: after want and dus the word order stays normal (want ik ben ziek).

Time. 40 minutes for 4 tasks is 10 minutes per task. A form takes less, so you win time for the longer tasks.

Open task

Students write on paper or type their answer, then compare it with the model and tick the checklist. Pro students send it to their teacher.

Exam focus

Component: Schrijven. Task type: forms (formulier) and short messages (briefje, kaartje, korte e-mail).

  • Real task: pen and paper, 40 minutes, 4 writing tasks. Publicly described as: filling in a form, writing one or two short messages, and one or two short open writing tasks. This lesson covers the form and the short note; EX-A2.6 covers emails and short texts.
  • The form: personal details (name, date of birth, address, phone, email), tick boxes, and often one or two short answers ("Waarom wilt u…?").
  • The short message: a note to a neighbour, a card to a colleague, a message to a teacher, usually with 2–3 points you must include.

Most common mistakes

  1. Leaving a field empty or writing in the wrong field (a street name under "Woonplaats").
  2. Writing only two of the three points the task asks for.
  3. No greeting or no name at the end of the note.
  4. Copying long sentences from the task instead of writing your own.
  5. One long sentence without full stops or capital letters, or handwriting the examiner can't read.
