Exam tip A2: how to use a mock exam

Last updated: 10/28/2026

Strategy notes

Simulate the real day. Do the mock in one sitting, or in two blocks (Lezen + Luisteren, then Schrijven + Spreken), at the time of day your real exam will be. Use headphones (but not noise cancelling, an exam place can be noisy!), put your phone away, and write Schrijven on paper with a pen. No dictionary, no translation app, no pausing.

Keep to the times. Lezen: about 2.5 minutes per question. Luisteren: read the question before each fragment, and choose straight after it ends. Schrijven: 6–7 minutes per task. Spreken: about 30–60 seconds per answer.

Score honestly. Lezen and Luisteren are scored automatically. For Schrijven and Spreken, compare your answer with the model and use the rubric. If you have a teacher (Pro), send your Schrijven and Spreken answers for a second opinion.

Read your results by task type, not only the total. A 9/13 in Lezen with all mistakes on "what must you do?" questions means that that is what to work on.

When to book. If you reach the "safe" score in a skill, you are probably ready to book that exam. If you are in the "borderline" band, do the catch-up practice and redo the mock in 2–3 weeks. You can book the four exams separately, so start with your strongest skill.

Open task: Oefenexamen Schrijven

Write all three tasks on paper in 20 minutes. Then compare with the model answers and score each task with the rubric. Pro students send the paper (photo) to their teacher. Delivered as teacher homework until the open-task step exists.

Taak 2 · Briefje

Bel me dan: 06 1122 3344.

Bedankt!

Groeten, Yara Nassar (nummer 10)

Taak 3 · E-mail

Schrijf:

  1. waarom u niet komt;
  2. een vraag over het huiswerk;
  3. wanneer u weer komt.

Model answer:

Beste meneer Bakker,

Rubric Schrijven (score each task 0–2 on each line; max 6 per task, 18 in total)

0 · 1 · 2

  • Task completion · One point or less done, or the wrong task · Most points done, one missing or unclear · All points done
  • Understandable · A reader doesn't understand the message · Understandable with effort · Clear at first reading; greeting and name where needed
  • Language · Mostly single words, many errors that block meaning · Simple sentences, errors that don't block meaning · Correct simple sentences, right word order, right form (u/je)

Open task: Oefenexamen Spreken

For each prompt: read or watch it, think for 10 seconds, then record your answer (about 30–60 seconds). Don't stop the recording to start again. Then listen back, compare with the model answer and score each answer with the rubric. Pro students send the recordings to their teacher. Delivered as teacher homework until the open-task step exists. Image briefs for the design team are in italics.

Deel 1 · Reageren op een video

  1. Video: een collega zegt: "Ik ga volgende maand trouwen!"

Model: Wat leuk, gefeliciteerd! Waar gaan jullie trouwen?

Model: De eieren? Die zijn daar, naast de melk. Ga hier rechtdoor en dan naar links. Ik loop wel even mee!

Deel 2 · Een foto en een vraag

  1. Plaatje A: een sportschool. Plaatje B: hardlopen in het park. U wilt meer sporten. Wat kiest u? Waarom?

  1. Plaatje A: bloemen. Plaatje B: een taart. Uw vriendin is jarig. Wat neemt u mee? Waarom?

Rubric Spreken (score each answer 0–2; max 16)

Score · Description

  • 0 · No answer, not understandable, or about something else
  • 1 · Partly: one word or one sentence only, one part of a two-part question missing, or only one picture of three
  • 2 · Complete: answers every part, in sentences, understandable for a Dutch listener; small mistakes and an accent are fine

Exam focus

Component: all four language exams (KNM has its own mock, K.11). Task types: every EX-A2 task type.

Step · Mock · Real exam (as publicly known)

  • 1 · Lezen · 3 texts, 13 MC questions, timed: 32 min · 65 min, about 25 MC questions, computer
  • 2 · Luisteren · 4 fragments, 12 MC questions, plays once, timed: 22 min · 45 min, about 25 MC questions, computer
  • 3 · Schrijven · 3 tasks (form, note, email), timed: 20 min, on paper · 40 min, 4 tasks, pen and paper
  • 4 · Spreken · 8 prompts (2 per part), timed: about 18 min · 35 min, about 16 questions in 4 parts, computer

Most common mistakes in a mock

  1. Pausing the timer or looking things up: then the score says nothing.
  2. Skipping the self-scoring of Schrijven and Spreken because it is "not automatic".
  3. Looking only at the total and not at which task type went wrong.
  4. Doing the mock too early (before EX-A2.1–7) or the day before the exam (no time left to fix weak spots).

Scoring & next steps

How to read your score. The real A2 exams are pass/fail per component. DUO doesn't publish a percentage on its website; secondary sources report about 19/25 for Lezen and 18/25 for Luisteren (roughly 72–76%). The bands below aim a little higher than that, so a "safe" score in the mock leaves room for nerves on the day.

Skill · Max · Safe (book the exam) · Borderline (practise 2–3 weeks, redo) · Not yet (revisit lessons)

  • Lezen · 13 · 11–13 · 9–10 · 0–8
  • Luisteren · 12 · 10–12 · 8–9 · 0–7
  • Schrijven (rubric) · 18 · 14–18 · 11–13 · 0–10
  • Spreken (rubric) · 16 · 13–16 · 10–12 · 0–9

The checkpoint (Step 6) has a pass mark of 60, so it opens the next item on the path. The skill table above is the real guide.
