Exam tip: sentence tasks and short formal texts

Plan your 100 minutes.

Last updated: 10/31/2026

Strategy notes

Plan your 100 minutes. A workable split: zinstaken about 15 minutes in total, each korte schrijftaak about 20 minutes, each middellange schrijftaak about 30 minutes, and 10 minutes to check everything. You may do the tasks in any order: many candidates start with the longest task while they are fresh.

Zinstaken. Read the situation twice. Ask: who is speaking to whom (formal or informal)? Then look at the last word of the given start: after omdat, hoewel, zodat, als the verb goes to the end; after a full subclause, the next main clause starts with the verb. Write exactly one complete sentence, and end it with a full stop.

Korte schrijftaak. Before writing, number every point in the task (1, 2, 3, 4). Then use a fixed structure:

  1. Aanhef: Geachte heer, mevrouw / Geachte mevrouw Jansen,
  2. Aanleiding: why you're writing, with a reference (Naar aanleiding van uw brief van… / kenmerk…).
  3. Kern: the facts or the problem, short and concrete.
  4. Verzoek of voorstel: what you want the reader to do, and by when.
  5. Afsluiting: a closing sentence and Met vriendelijke groet, your name.

Before you move on: tick off each numbered point, check u everywhere, check verb positions in long sentences. Assessors look at task completion first; a beautiful text that misses a point scores lower than a plain one that covers everything.

Open task: Schrijven: korte schrijftaak

Prompt A · korte schrijftaak (about 20 minutes, 100–150 words)

Model answer (about 130 words, without subject line and address)

Onderwerp: Onderhoud lift Parklaan – uw brief met kenmerk TB/2611/045

Geachte heer, mevrouw,

Elif Kaya

Parklaan 88, Utrecht

Prompt B · zinstaken (about 8 minutes). Finish each sentence. Write one complete sentence each time.

# · Situation and start · Model answer

Checklist (yes/no) · for Prompt A; students tick it before sending, the teacher uses it to mark

  1. Task: Did I cover all four points (reference, problem, proposal, reply date)?
  2. Register: Did I use u throughout, a formal aanhef and Met vriendelijke groet?
  3. Structure: Does each paragraph have one job (reason, problem, proposal, request)?
  4. Vocabulary: Did I use at least three formal phrases (e.g. naar aanleiding van, op prijs stellen, graag ontvang ik)?
  5. Grammar: Is the verb at the end after omdat, zodat, als, and does the main clause start with the verb after a subclause?
  6. Coherence: Did I link my sentences with words like maar, daarom, zodat, als dat niet mogelijk is?
  7. Length: Is the email between 100 and 150 words, with an informative subject line?

For Prompt B: one sentence each; it connects logically to the start; correct word order; right register for the situation.

Exam focus

  • Component: Schrijven. Task types: zinstaak and korte schrijftaak.
  • What the real task looks like: 100 minutes on the computer; you choose the order of the tasks. Programma II has 7–8 zinstaken ("het schrijven van één zin of het afmaken van een zin"), 1–2 korte schrijftaken (for example a note, a short letter or a short description of a situation) and 1–2 middellange schrijftaken (see EX-B2.5). A paper dictionary is allowed. Two trained assessors mark your texts.
  • A sentence task gives a short situation and the start of a sentence, or asks for one sentence. Your sentence must fit the situation, be grammatically correct and use the right register.
  • A short writing task describes a situation and lists what your text must contain. Every listed point counts.
  • Most common mistakes:
  1. Leaving out one of the content points in the task.
  2. Mixing u and je, or opening with Hoi and closing with Groetjes in a formal text.
  3. Wrong word order after omdat, hoewel, zodat or after a subclause at the start (Zodra …, stuur ik…).
  4. In a sentence task, writing a second sentence or a sentence that doesn't connect to the given start.
  5. Copying whole phrases from the task instead of answering it.
