Exam tip: writing an A2 email

Last updated: 10/28/2026

Strategy notes

This tip covers the email task of the A2 writing exam. For the whole exam, read our guide How the Dutch inburgeringsexamen works.

Step 1: who is the reader?

  • A friend, neighbour or colleague you know well: informal (Hoi / Beste + first name, je/jij, Groetjes).
  • A company, the gemeente, a landlord, a teacher you don't know: formal (Geachte heer, mevrouw, / Beste mevrouw Jansen, u, Met vriendelijke groet).
  • "Beste" is a good start for both formal and informal letters, combined with first name (informal: Beste Henk,) or last name (formal: Beste meneer Janssen,).
  • "Groet, your name" is a good ending for both formal and informal letters.
  • Stay consistent.

Step 2: count the points. The exercise always includes several points you'll have to cover (for example: Say that you can't come - Explain why - Give an alternative date). Make sure you do them all.

Step 3: useful phrases per type.

  • Uitnodigen: Ik wil je uitnodigen voor… · Het begint om… · Kom je ook?
  • Afzeggen: Helaas kan ik niet komen, omdat/want… · Sorry! · Kunnen we een andere dag afspreken?
  • Vragen: Ik heb een vraag over… · Kunt u mij laten weten…? · Alvast bedankt!
  • Klagen: Ik wil een klacht doorgeven. · Helaas is … kapot. · Ik wil graag mijn geld terug / een nieuwe…

Step 4: stick to the exercise and don't show off!

It's tempting to do more than they ask.

For example, look at these sentences for canceling an appointment today with a friend, giving a reason and an alternative date.

Easy:
Hoi Peter,

Ik kan vandaag niet komen, want ik moet werken. Ik kan zondag afspreken. Jij ook?

Groetjes,
Anna

More difficult (so more chances to make mistakes):
Hoi Peter,

Hoe gaat het met je? Ik hoop dat het goed gaat.

Het spijt me, maar ik kan vandaag helaas niet komen, want ik moet plotseling werken. Mijn collega is ziek. Kan je misschien zondag afspreken? Ik kan in de middag. Ik hoop dat we elkaar zondag zien!

Laat je het me weten? Nogmaals sorry en fijne dag!

Groetjes,
Anna

Although the easy version might seem blunt, it's totally okay and you'll earn the same number of points with both versions. However, with the more difficult version, the chance of making mistakes is much higher.

Step 5: Stick to main clauses if possible.

In a main clause, the conjugated verb is second.

In a subordinate clause, the verbs all go to the end.

In the writing exam for A2, you'll rarely really need a subordinate clause. Although you might need the conjunctions als or toen, which are followed by a subordinate clause. Omdat is optional, since you could use want instead.

Let's look at an example. Your neighbour always plays music at 22.00 in the evening. You hear the music. You write your neighbour a message. Say you don't like that he plays music at 22.00. Also say why. Also give a possible solution.

Version 1: Only main clauses

Beste Herman,

Jij draait om 22.00 muziek. Dat is een probleem, want wij kunnen de muziek horen. Het is te laat. Mijn kinderen slapen om 22.00. Kan je een koptelefoon gebruiken?

Groetjes,
Anna

Version 2: with subordinate clauses

Beste Herman,

Ik hoor dat je om 22.00 muziek draait. Dat is een probleem, omdat wij de muziek kunnen horen. Ik vind dat het te laat is. Mijn kinderen slapen om 22.00. Denk je dat je een koptelefoon kan gebruiken?

Groetjes,
Anna

As you can see, version 2 is more complex. Both versions are correct.

Step 6: check everything. Greeting? All points? Request? Closing + name? Verb conjugated and in the second place in the main sentences? Verb at the end after omdat, toen and als? Then stop. A clear 50-word email is better than a confusing 120-word one.

Open task

Task A · Informeel: afzeggen

Prompt: U heeft zaterdag een afspraak met uw vriendin Lotte. Jullie gaan samen naar de markt in Utrecht. Maar u kunt niet. Schrijf een e-mail aan Lotte (40–60 woorden). Schrijf:

  1. dat u niet kunt komen, en waarom;
  2. sorry;
  3. een voorstel voor een andere dag.

Model answer

Hoi Lotte,

Helaas kan ik zaterdag niet mee naar de markt, omdat mijn zoon ziek is. Hij heeft al twee dagen koorts. Sorry!

Zullen we volgende week zaterdag gaan?

Groetjes,

Marta

Checklist (yes/no)

  1. Did I say I can't come, with a reason? (point 1)
  2. Did I say sorry? (point 2)
  3. Did I suggest another day? (point 3)
  4. Informal all the way: Hoi/Beste Lotte, je/jij, Groetjes?
  5. After omdat and als, is the verb at the end (omdat mijn zoon ziek is)?
  6. Did I end with my name?
  7. Is it about 40–60 words?

Task B · Formeel: klagen

Prompt: U huurt een appartement van Woonstichting Groenrijk. De verwarming in uw woonkamer is al een week kapot. U heeft vorige week gebeld, maar er is nog niemand geweest. Schrijf een e-mail aan de woonstichting (50–80 woorden). Schrijf:

  1. wat het probleem is;
  2. wat u al heeft gedaan;
  3. wat u wilt.

Model answer

Onderwerp: Verwarming kapot, Parkweg 7

Geachte heer, mevrouw,

Ik woon op de Parkweg 7 in Leiden. De verwarming in mijn woonkamer is al een week kapot. Het is erg koud in huis.

Vorige week heb ik uw klantenservice gebeld. De medewerker heeft toen gezegd: "Er komt snel iemand." Maar er is nog niemand geweest.

Ik wil een afspraak maken. Kunt u mij bellen om een afspraak te maken?

Met vriendelijke groet,

Joseph Mensah

Checklist (yes/no)

  1. Did I describe the problem? (point 1)
  2. Did I say what I already did, in the perfectum? (point 2)
  3. Did I ask clearly for what I want? (point 3)
  4. Formal all the way: Geachte heer, mevrouw, / u / Met vriendelijke groet?
  5. Did I write a subject line?
  6. Are my helping verbs right (ik heb gebeld, er is niemand geweest)?
  7. Did I end with my full name?

Exam focus

Component: Schrijven. Task type: short emails and short texts (open writing tasks).

  • Real task: pen and paper, 40 minutes, 4 tasks in total. After the form and short messages (EX-A2.3) come one or two open tasks: an email, a letter or a short text about a situation. The task tells you who you write to and which points you must include, often 3.
  • Typical situations: inviting someone, cancelling or moving an appointment, asking for information, complaining about a product or a problem in your home, telling what happened.

Most common mistakes

  1. Mixing formal and informal: "Geachte heer" and then "Hoi, hoe gaat het met je?".
  2. Forgetting one of the points in the task, often the last one ("wat wilt u?").
  3. Telling the story but never saying what you want (no request, no question).
  4. Mistakes with inversion: "Morgen ik kan afspreken" should be "Morgen kan ik afspreken. Verb second place in a main clause.
  5. Word order after omdat: "omdat ik ben ziek" instead of "omdat ik ziek ben".
  6. Perfectum mistakes: the wrong helping verb (ik ben gekocht) or no participle at the end.
