Exam tip: writing an email

Last updated: 10/31/2026

Strategy notes

1. Read the task twice and count the points. Most tasks give two or three things to do ("Vertel…, Leg uit…, Vraag…"). Every point must be in your text: an assessor checks them one by one. Tick them off when you plan.

2. Choose the tone: u or je? A company, the council, a landlord or a teacher you don't know: u, "Geachte heer, mevrouw," and "Met vriendelijke groet,". A friend, a neighbour you know or a colleague: je, "Hoi / Beste …," and "Groetjes / Hartelijke groet,". Never mix the two in one email.

3. Use a fixed structure.

Part · What · Example

  • Aanhef · greeting · Geachte heer, mevrouw,
  • Alinea 1 · why you write · Ik schrijf u omdat…
  • Alinea 2 · the facts or the problem · Op 2 oktober heb ik… Helaas…
  • Alinea 3 · your request or proposal · Graag wil ik… / Kunt u mij laten weten…?
  • Afsluiting · closing line + greeting + name · Ik hoor graag van u. Met vriendelijke groet, Karim Haddad

4. Link your sentences. Use want, omdat, maar, daarom, dus, eerst… daarna. Two or three connectors make your text clearly better.

5. Short and correct beats long and wrong. Write sentences you are sure of. Add one or two longer ones with omdat or als.

6. Time. About 25 minutes per korte schrijftaak: 3 minutes planning, 15 writing, 5 checking. When you check, look at the verb position, -t/-d endings, de/het, and capitals at the start of sentences and names. Use the dictionary for spelling.

Open task: a formal complaint and an informal reply

Two exam-style writing tasks. The student writes in a text box (or in the homework item), then compares with the model answer and ticks the checklist. Pro students send the text to a teacher.

Opdracht A · Een klacht (formeel)

Prompt (as on the exam screen):

Schrijf minstens 60 woorden. Schrijf volledige zinnen.

English for the student: Write a formal complaint email: what you ordered and when, what the problem is, and what solution you want.

Model answer (~100 words):

Onderwerp: Bestelling 20481 nog niet ontvangen

Geachte heer, mevrouw,

Laat het me weten.

Tot zaterdag!

Groetjes,

Nadia

Exam focus

Component · Schrijven

  • Task type · Korte schrijftaak: a short formal or informal email or letter (complaint, request, reaction). Also trained here: zinstaken (finishing a sentence) and deelschrijftaken (finishing a short message) through the phrase drills.
  • What the real task looks like · 100 minutes on the computer: you type your answers. Programma I has 8 zinstaken, 2 deelschrijftaken (short message, finish a text, a form) and 2 korte schrijftaken (e.g. a note or a short letter / email). The Van Dale Pocketwoordenboek NT2 is allowed. Two assessors score each exam.

Most common mistakes

  1. Missing a content point from the task (you complain, but never say what you want).
  2. Mixing u and je, or "Hoi!" to a company and "Geachte" to a friend.
  3. No clear request or next step at the end.
  4. Word order in long sentences: verb second in the main clause, verb at the end after omdat / dat / als / of.
  5. Copying the task text word for word instead of writing your own sentences.
