A conjunction is the glue between two sentences. But there are three different types. Let's look at an example from every group.
The bold words form the connection between the sentences. But now look at the sentences after the bold words. What is the position of the conjugated verb?
These three bold words (maar, omdat, daarom) all three represent a category of connectors:
1) Maar en of want dus (MEOWD) - basic conjunctions triggering a normal main clause.
2) Omdat, als, toen, wanneer, zodat, nadat, totdat, hoewel, etc. - conjunctions triggering a subordinate clause.
3) Daarom, bovendien, desondanks, toch, daardoor, ook al, ook, etc. - conjunctional adverbs.
In this article we have a close look at the third group: conjunctional adverbs.
Adverbial connectors (bovendien, daarom, desondanks, toch, daardoor …) are part of the sentence. When they come first, they take position 1, so the conjugated verbum comes next and the subject follows it: this is called inversion/inversie.
These words look like conjunctions, but they grammaticaly act like any other adverb.

Kortom usually stands on its own, followed by a comma and normal word order, as in the last example.

Compare: Het regende. *Daarom** bleef ik thuis* (my choice) vs. Het regende. *Daardoor** was de weg glad* (simply a consequence).

Daarentegen contrasts two different things or groups. It usually stands after the verb, or right after the part it contrasts: Mijn broer daarentegen fietst nooit.
Echter means however, but it behaves differently from English however. In modern Dutch it normally sits after the conjugated verb (or after a pronoun that follows it), inside the sentence. Because the subject stays in position 1, there is no inversie.

Avoid starting a sentence with Echter,. It is a common anglicism and most style guides reject it. If you want the contrast at the start, use maar or toch, or put another connector first:

Steeds meer jongeren rijden op een fatbike. Ten eerste zijn deze fietsen zwaar en snel. Bovendien rijden veel jongeren te hard. Daardoor gebeuren er meer ongelukken. Fabrikanten zeggen echter dat de fietsen veilig zijn. Desondanks maken veel ouders zich zorgen. Daarom pleit ik voor een helmplicht. Kortom, we moeten nu iets doen.
English: More and more young people ride fat bikes. Firstly, these bikes are heavy and fast. Moreover, many young people ride too fast. As a result, more accidents happen. Manufacturers, however, say the bikes are safe. Nevertheless, many parents are worried. That's why I'm in favour of compulsory helmets. In short, we need to act now.
