Diminutives in Dutch: -je, -tje, -pje, -etje and -kje

*Een kopje koffie, een broodje, een cadeautje*: the Dutch love diminutives (*verkleinwoorden*). They make things small, but just as often friendly, casual or cosy. Here is how to build them and when to use them.

1. Which ending? The five forms

Diminutives in Dutch

The basic ending is -je. The sound at the end of the word decides whether you need a "helper" letter.

Ending · When · Examples

Two spelling details:

  • A word ending in a single long a, o or u doubles that vowel: de oma → het omaatje, de auto → het autootje, het menu → het menuutje.
  • A few words with a short vowel + b, g or p also take -etje: de brug → het bruggetje, de weg → het weggetje.

2. Always het, plural with -s

Every diminutive is a het-word, even if the original noun is a de-word. The plural always ends in -s.

Original · Diminutive · Plural

  • de tafel · het tafeltje · de tafeltjes
  • de vrouw · het vrouwtje · de vrouwtjes
  • het huis · het huisje · de huisjes

Because it is a het-word, the usual het-rules apply: dit/dat instead of deze/die, and no -e on the adjective after een.

Dutch · English

  • Dat kopje is van mij. · That cup is mine.
  • We huren een klein huisje aan zee. · We're renting a little house by the sea.
  • Het kleine huisje is al verhuurd. · The little house has already been rented.

3. More than "small"

A diminutive often adds a feeling rather than a size.

Meaning · Example · English

  • small · een boompje in de tuin · a little tree in the garden
  • affection · mijn zusje · my little sister
  • casual, pleasant · Zullen we een biertje drinken? · Shall we have a beer?
  • short, relaxed · een weekendje weg, een dagje uit · a weekend away, a day out
  • polite softening · Heeft u even een momentje? · Do you have a moment?
  • belittling · Hij heeft een baantje bij de supermarkt. · He has a (little) job at the supermarket.

4. Words with their own meaning

Some diminutives have become words of their own. Learn these as vocabulary:

5. Diminutives on Dutch holidays

Feestdagen are full of them. Around Sinterklaas you get cadeautjes and pepernootjes; at a birthday there are hapjes and someone sings a liedje; at Easter children look for paaseitjes; at Christmas you light kaarsjes.

Dutch · English

  • Sinterklaas brengt cadeautjes voor de kinderen. · Sinterklaas brings presents for the children.
