Comparison · Word · Example · English
You will hear groter als in everyday speech, but in standard Dutch it is wrong. Stick to dan after a comparative.
1) Net zo 2) even ... als 3) zo ... als
All three mean "as … as". Net zo stresses "just as", even sounds slightly more neutral or formal, and plain zo … als is common in fixed comparisons.
Dutch · English
After als (and dan), standard Dutch uses the subject pronoun: als ik, als jij, als hij. Als mij is common in speech, but avoid it in writing.
Put niet before zo (or even). This is the natural Dutch way to say something is "less …".
Dutch · English
Minder groot dan also exists, but niet zo groot als sounds more natural.
Pattern · Dutch · English
Evenveel and zoveel are written as one word. Net zo'n means "the same kind of", not the very same object (see our article on zo'n and zulke).
Pattern · Use · Example · English
Note that anders takes dan, not als.
Don't confuse comparison even (equally) with the particle even (just, briefly): Wacht even!
The context makes the meaning clear: comparison even is always followed by an adjective, adverb or veel and then als: Mijn badkamer is even groot als mijn slaapkamer.
