# false friends

1. What is a false friend?

A false friend (valse vriend) is a Dutch word that looks like an English word but means something else. Dutch and English are related, so many words look alike and mean the same (de hand, het water). That's why false friends are tricky: you don't think of looking them up.

There are two kinds:

  • Completely different: eventueel means possibly, not eventually.
  • Partly the same: de agenda is a meeting agenda, but also your diary.

Tip: if the English meaning makes a sentence sound strange, you've probably found a false friend.

2. The big four: eventueel, actueel, brutaal, sympathiek

  • eventueel = possibly, if needed. Eventually is uiteindelijk. Ik kan eventueel morgen langskomen. · I could come by tomorrow if needed.
  • eventuele (before a noun) = any, possible. Eventuele kosten worden vergoed. · Any costs will be reimbursed.
  • actueel = current, topical. Actual is echt or werkelijk, and actually is eigenlijk. Klimaatverandering is een heel actueel onderwerp. · Climate change is a very topical subject.
  • brutaal = cheeky, rude. Brutal is wreed or bruut. Wat brutaal: hij drong zomaar voor bij de kassa. · How rude: he just pushed in at the checkout.
  • sympathiek = likeable, nice. Sympathetic is meelevend or begripvol. Mijn nieuwe collega lijkt me heel sympathiek. · My new colleague seems very likeable.

3. Verbs: controleren, solliciteren, lusten, worden

  • controleren = to check. To control is beheersen or onder controle houden. Controleer je antwoorden voordat je het formulier verstuurt. · Check your answers before you send the form.
  • solliciteren = to apply for a job. For a visa, a permit or a benefit, you use aanvragen. Ik heb bij drie bedrijven gesolliciteerd. · I've applied to three companies.
  • lusten = to like (food and drink), not to lust. You use it mostly in questions and with geen or niet. Ik lust geen spruitjes. · I don't like Brussels sprouts. Lust je nog een stukje taart? · Would you like another piece of cake?
  • worden = to become. Becomen doesn't exist, and bekomen means to get over a shock. Ze wil verpleegkundige worden. · She wants to become a nurse. Ik moest even bekomen van de schrik. · I needed a moment to get over the shock.

4. Nouns: de map, de file, de chef, de agenda, het formulier

  • de map = folder. A map is de kaart, or for a town de plattegrond. Ik heb alle foto's in één map gezet. · I put all the photos in one folder.
  • de file = traffic jam. A computer file is het bestand. Ik stond een uur in de file op de A2. · I was stuck in a traffic jam on the A2 for an hour.
  • de chef = the boss at work. In a restaurant, de chef or de chef-kok is the head cook, but any other cook is de kok. Ik moet het eerst aan mijn chef vragen. · I have to ask my boss first.
  • de agenda = the agenda of a meeting, and also your diary or calendar for appointments. A diary for your thoughts is het dagboek. Ik zet de afspraak meteen in mijn agenda. · I'll put the appointment in my diary right away.
  • het formulier = a form you fill in. A formula is de formule, and a shape is de vorm. Vul het formulier in en stuur het naar de gemeente. · Fill in the form and send it to the municipality.

5. Small words: slim, door, nou

  • slim = clever, smart. Slim (thin) is slank. Dat is een slimme oplossing. · That's a clever solution.
  • door = through, or by in the passieve vorm. A door is de deur. Het museum is ontworpen door een bekende architect. · The museum was designed by a famous architect.
  • nou sounds like English now. In casual speech it can also just mean nu (now). But most often it means well, or it adds emphasis. Nou, dat weet ik nog niet. · Well, I don't know yet.
