Explanation

The difference between thuis and huis in Dutch

Sometimes "thuis" and "huis" look similar:

  • Ik ga naar huis.
  • I am going home.
  • ------------------
  • Ik ben thuis.
  • I am home.

What is the difference? It is simple: thuis means at home and is almost never combined with a preposition.

Huis can be used as house, but also as home when combined with a preposition.
