Numbers and telling the time in Dutch

Prices, phone numbers, train times: numbers are everywhere in Dutch daily life. Two things surprise English speakers: the units come before the tens, and "half vier" means 3:30, not 4:30.

0 to 20

0 nul · 1 een (één) · 2 twee · 3 drie

  • 4 vier · 5 vijf · 6 zes · 7 zeven
  • 8 acht · 9 negen · 10 tien · 11 elf
  • 12 twaalf · 13 dertien · 14 veertien · 15 vijftien
  • 16 zestien · 17 zeventien · 18 achttien · 19 negentien
  • 20 twintig

één or een? Write accents only when you need to make clear you mean the number: Ik heb één kind (one child), instead of een kind (a child).

Watch the spelling of dertien (not drietien) and veertien (not viertien).

2. The tens

20 twintig · 30 dertig · 40 veertig

  • 50 vijftig · 60 zestig · 70 zeventig
  • 80 tachtig · 90 negentig · 100 honderd

Again: dertig and veertig, and a t at the start of tachtig.

3. Units before tens

From 21 to 99, Dutch says the units first, then en, then the tens, all in one word. Think of the old English "four-and-twenty blackbirds".

Number · Dutch · Literally

  • 21 · eenentwintig · one-and-twenty
  • 22 · tweeëntwintig · two-and-twenty
  • 23 · drieëntwintig · three-and-twenty
  • 34 · vierendertig · four-and-thirty
  • 45 · vijfenveertig · five-and-forty
  • 58 · achtenvijftig · eight-and-fifty
  • 99 · negenennegentig · nine-and-ninety

After twee and drie you write ën with two dots (a trema), so you know the e starts a new syllable: twee-ën-twintig.

4. 100 to 1000

Just say honderd and duizend, never "een honderd". Up to 1000, the whole number is one word.

Number · Dutch

  • 100 · honderd
  • 101 · honderdeen
  • 135 · honderdvijfendertig
  • 200 · tweehonderd
  • 365 · driehonderdvijfenzestig
  • 1000 · duizend

Money: Dutch uses a comma for decimals. €2,50 is twee euro vijftig (euro stays singular).

5. Telling the time

Ask Hoe laat is het? (What time is it?) and answer Het is …. Use uur for whole hours, and it never takes a plural: drie uur.

The key: half points to the next hour. Half vier = halfway to four = 3:30. Times between :20 and :40 are counted from that half hour.

Time · Dutch

  • 3:00 · drie uur
  • 3:05 · vijf over drie
  • 3:15 · kwart over drie
  • 3:20 · tien voor half vier
  • 3:25 · vijf voor half vier
  • 3:30 · half vier
  • 3:35 · vijf over half vier
  • 3:40 · tien over half vier
  • 3:45 · kwart voor vier
  • 3:50 · tien voor vier

You will also hear twintig over drie (3:20) and twintig voor vier (3:40), but the half-hour version is more common in the Netherlands.

6. When? Om + time

To say at a time, use om: De trein vertrekt om half negen. Add the part of the day if needed:

Dutch · English

  • 's ochtends / 's morgens · in the morning
  • 's middags · in the afternoon
  • 's avonds · in the evening
  • 's nachts · at night

Dutch · English

  • Hoe laat begint de les? Om zeven uur 's avonds. · What time does the class start? At 7 pm.
  • Ik werk tot kwart over vijf. · I work until a quarter past five.
  • De trein van 14.48 uur heeft vertraging. · The 14:48 train is delayed.

Timetables and announcements use the 24-hour clock: 14.48 uur is read as veertien uur achtenveertig. In conversation, people say twaalf voor drie.

Common mistakes

Wrong · Right · Why

  • twintigeen · eenentwintig · Units come first.
  • tweeentwintig · tweeëntwintig · Trema after twee and drie.
  • viertig · veertig · Spelling: vee-.
  • een honderd · honderd · No "een" before honderd or duizend.
  • Het is drie uren. · Het is drie uur. · Uur stays singular.
  • half drie = 3:30 · half vier = 3:30 · Half points to the next hour.
  • Wat tijd is het? · Hoe laat is het? · Fixed question.
  • Ik kom op acht uur. · Ik kom om acht uur. · "At" a time = om.
