Plurals in Dutch: -en, -s and the irregular ones

One fiets, two fietsen; one auto, two auto's. Most Dutch plurals follow two simple endings, plus a few spelling rules and a short list of exceptions you will hear every day
Has Quiz

1. The plural article is always "de"

In the plural, every noun takes de, even het-words. Een has no plural: you simply drop it.

Singular · Plural · English

  • de trein · de treinen · the train(s)
  • het boek · de boeken · the book(s)
  • een fiets · fietsen · a bike / bikes
  • het station · de stations · the station(s)

2. Most nouns: add -en

This is the default. Most short words and most words ending in a stressed syllable take -en.

Singular · Plural · English

  • de fiets · de fietsen · bike
  • de trein · de treinen · train
  • het vliegtuig · de vliegtuigen · plane
  • het boek · de boeken · book
  • de kaart · de kaarten · map, card

3. Add -s (or -'s)

Use -s when the word ends in an unstressed -el, -em, -en, -er, -e or -je, and with many loanwords:

Singular · Plural · English

  • de tafel · de tafels · table
  • de jongen · de jongens · boy
  • de fietser · de fietsers · cyclist
  • de halte · de haltes · stop
  • het kaartje · de kaartjes · ticket
  • de tram · de trams · tram
  • het station · de stations · station

Use -'s (with an apostrophe) after a word that ends in a, o, u, i or y. The apostrophe keeps the vowel long:

Singular · Plural · English

  • de auto · de auto's · car
  • de taxi · de taxi's · taxi
  • de metro · de metro's · metro
  • de collega · de collega's · colleague
  • de baby · de baby's · baby

4. Spelling changes with -en

Adding -en adds a syllable, so the spelling has to protect the sound of the vowel. (Our article on open and closed syllables explains why.)

  • Short vowel → double the consonant: de bus → de bussen, de man → de mannen, de brug → de bruggen.
  • Long vowel (aa, ee, oo, uu) → write one vowel: de straat → de straten, de boot → de boten, het uur → de uren.
  • f → v and s → z (usually after a long vowel or a diphthong): de brief → de brieven, de reis → de reizen, het huis → de huizen.

Singular · Plural · English

  • de bus · de bussen · bus
  • de straat · de straten · street
  • de boot · de boten · boat
  • de reis · de reizen · journey
  • de brief · de brieven · letter

Not every s or f changes: de dans → de dansen, de fotograaf → de fotografen. Check a dictionary when in doubt.

5. Irregular plurals worth learning by heart

Pattern · Singular → plural · English

  • -eren · het kind → de kinderen · child
  • het ei → de eieren · egg
  • het lied → de liederen · song
  • vowel changes · de stad → de steden · city
  • het schip → de schepen · ship
  • het lid → de leden · member
  • short vowel becomes long · de dag → de dagen · day
  • de weg → de wegen · road
  • het glas → de glazen · glass
  • het spel → de spelen · game
  • -heid → -heden · de mogelijkheid → de mogelijkheden · possibility
  • other · de koe → de koeien · cow

Notice dag → dagen: the a sounds long in the plural, so there is no double g.

Tip: after a number, measurements usually stay singular: twee jaar, drie uur, vijf euro, twee kilo. So: Ik woon hier al twee jaar.

Common mistakes

Wrong · Right · Why

  • de busen · de bussen · Short u: double the s.
  • de straaten · de straten · Open syllable: one a is enough.
  • de autos · de auto's · Ending in -o: add 's.
  • de daggen · de dagen · Irregular: the a becomes long.
  • de kinders · de kinderen · Standard plural is -eren.
  • het boeken · de boeken · Plurals always take de.
  • de briefen · de brieven · f becomes v.
  • Ik woon hier twee jaren. · Ik woon hier twee jaar. · Time units after a number stay singular.
