Hoewel, tenzij, zodat, terwijl, zodra, mits ...

At A2 you learned *omdat*, *als* and *dat*. To discuss work, contracts and plans at B2 level, you need more precise links: *although*, *unless*, *so that*, *while*, *as soon as* and *provided that*. Good news: the word order is exactly what you already know.
Has Quiz

1. Word order: nothing new, just stricter

Hoewel, tenzij, zodat, terwijl, zodra, mits, indien, doordat, voordat, nadat, sinds, totdat, alsof & aangezien are subordinating conjunctions (onderschikkende voegwoorden). They belong to the same family as words like terwijl, omdat, wanneer, toen and als.

They start a bijzin, and in a bijzin all verbs go to the end. Separable verbs join up again, and modals and infinitives cluster together.

When the bijzin comes first, it fills position 1. The main clause then starts with the conjugated verbum (inversie): verb, comma, verb.

Dutch · English

  • Ik bel je, zodra ik thuis ben. · I'll call you as soon as I'm home.
  • Zodra ik thuis ben, bel ik je. · As soon as I'm home, I'll call you.
  • Ik neem de trein, zodat ik onderweg kan werken. · I take the train so that I can work on the way.
  • Zodra de trein vertrekt, begin ik te lezen. · As soon as the train leaves, I start reading.

In this article, we'll dive a bit deeper in some conjunctions that are used a lot.

2. Contrast: hoewel and terwijl

Hoewel = although, even though. It introduces a fact that you'd expect to stop the main clause, but doesn't. The main clause often adds toch for emphasis.

Dutch · English

  • Hoewel hij weinig ervaring had, kreeg hij de baan. · Although he had little experience, he got the job.
  • Ik vind mijn werk leuk, hoewel het salaris laag is. · I like my job, although the salary is low.
  • Hoewel het regende, ging ze toch op de fiets. · Although it was raining, she still went by bike.

Terwijl has two meanings:

  1. while (two things at the same time);
  2. whereas / while (a contrast), often with some surprise or criticism.

Dutch · English

  • Ik luister naar podcasts terwijl ik naar mijn werk fiets. · I listen to podcasts while I cycle to work.
  • Hij verdient veel, terwijl zij bijna niets krijgt. · He earns a lot, whereas she gets almost nothing.
  • Hij kwam niet, terwijl hij het had beloofd. · He didn't come, even though he had promised.

3. Condition: tenzij and mits

Tenzij = unless. It already contains a "not", so don't add niet unless you really mean a double negative.

Dutch · English

  • Ik kom morgen naar kantoor, tenzij mijn kind ziek is. · I'll come to the office tomorrow unless my child is ill.
  • Je contract wordt verlengd, tenzij je zelf opzegt. · Your contract will be renewed unless you resign yourself.

Mits = provided that, on condition that. It is a little formal and you'll see it a lot in contracts and rules. It nearly always comes after the main clause.

Dutch · English

  • Je mag thuiswerken, mits je goed bereikbaar bent. · You may work from home, provided that you can be reached easily.
  • De reiskosten worden vergoed, mits je de bonnetjes inlevert. · Travel costs are reimbursed provided that you hand in the receipts.

In everyday speech, people often say als or op voorwaarde dat instead of mits.

4. Purpose and result: zodat

Zodat = so that. It expresses a purpose or a result, and the subject can be anyone.

Dutch · English

  • Ik vertrek om zeven uur, zodat ik niet in de file sta. · I leave at seven so that I'm not stuck in traffic.
  • De manager legt het uit, zodat iedereen het begrijpt. · The manager explains it so that everyone understands.
  • Het regende hard, zodat de wedstrijd werd afgelast. · It rained hard, so the match was cancelled.

Zodat or om … te?

With the same subject and a purpose, om … te is usually shorter: Ik vertrek vroeg om de file te vermijden.

With a different subjec, you need zodat: Ik vertrek vroeg zodat hij op tijd op school komt.

Zodat or dus? Dus is not a subordinating conjunction, so the verb does not go to the end: Het regende, dus we bleven thuis.

5. Time: zodra (and terwijl)

Zodra = as soon as. For the future, Dutch normally uses the present tense in both clauses.

Dutch · English

  • Zodra ik het contract heb, laat ik het je weten. · As soon as I have the contract, I'll let you know.
  • Bel me zodra je bent aangekomen. · Call me as soon as you've arrived.
  • Zodra de vergadering voorbij is, ga ik naar huis. · As soon as the meeting is over, I'm going home.
