TE with certain verbs

Learn the theory

Auxiliary verbs are verbs that you can combine with other verbs.
Examples are:
  • Ik ga vandaag werken.
  • Jij moet morgen de afwas doen.
  • Wij willen een kaartje kopen.
  • Ik hoef vandaag niet te werken.
As you can see the auxiliary verb hoeven will have to go along with TE. The auxiliary verb gaan does not. Some auxiliary verbs cause TE. TE comes right before the infinitive.
  • Ik probeer naar je feest te komen.
  • Wij durven niet te springen.
  • Jij beloofde de afwas te doen.
  • Jullie zitten samen te studeren.
You'll have to learn those auxiliary verbs that trigger TE by heart.
