Toen (conjunction)

1. One time events in the past.

  • Toen het vijf uur was, ging hij naar huis.
  • De receptie was gesloten, toen we bij het hotel arriveerden.

2. A period in the past.

  • Toen ik klein was, geloofde ik in Sinterklaas.
  • Wij gingen vaak naar het strand, toen wij nog in Italië woonden.
You never combine toen with present tense!
