Het verschil tussen eindelijk en uiteindelijk
1. Eindelijk
There is a clear difference between eindelijk and uiteindelijk. Let's look at some examples of eindelijk:
- Na negen uur rijden kwamen we eindelijk op de camping aan.
- Eindelijk is die saaie film afgelopen! Mag ik nu een programma kiezen?
- Ben je daar eindelijk? Ik sta al een half uur op je te wachten!
You use eindelijk when something has taken time or effort. The Dutch often combine eindelijk with "hè hè".
- Hè hè, eindelijk zijn we klaar met werken! Nu kan het weekend beginnen.
You could translate eindelijk as finally. It shows relieve and/or impatience.
2. Uiteindelijk
Uiteindelijk is used as "ten slotte". It shows the last action/result of a series of events.
- Mijn vrienden hebben me beloofd me te helpen met mijn verhuizing, maar uiteindelijk doe ik alles alleen. Iedereen is ziek.
- We wilden een kopje koffie drinken in de stad, maar alle terrassen waren vol! Uiteindelijk hebben we thuis koffie gedronken.
- Ze verhuisden naar het buitenland, maar ze kwamen uiteindelijk weer naar Nederland terug.
- We hebben lang vergaderd en zijn uiteindelijk tot een oplossing gekomen.
You could translate uiteindelijk as in the end.
