Inversion and word order

Starting a Dutch sentence with something else than the subject?
Has Quiz
# word order
# A1/A2

Explanation

Inversion in Dutch sentences

The personal form (finite, conjugated verb) is in second place in a sentence. Sometimes the subject then follows after the personal form. This is called inversion. No inversion:

  • De studenten gaan vanavond naar de bioscoop.
  • Ik koop morgen een nieuwe fiets.
  • Je kunt in Italië lekker eten.

Inversion:

  • Vanavond gaan de studenten naar de bioscoop.
  • Morgen koop ik een nieuwe fiets.
  • In Italië kun je lekker eten.

If you start the sentence with a different part than the subject, you must use inversion.
