Explanation

verbs

The conjugation of the present tense in Dutch is pretty simple.

You take the infinitive: werken

Je take away -en: werk

werk is the stem.

werk is the ik-vorm.

  • Ik = stem*
  • jij = ik-vorm + t
  • hij/zij/het/u = ik-vorm + t
  • Wij = infinitief
  • Jullie = infinitief
  • Zij = infinitief

* Sometimes you have to adjust the stem a little for the I form to keep the right sound:

  • maken - en = mak --> ik maak
  • spelen - en = spel --> ik speel
  • spellen - en = spell --> ik spel
  • eten - en = et --> ik eet

Some verbs don't end in -en: gaan, staan, slaan, zien, doen. The conjugations of these verbs is like this:

  • ik doe
  • jij doet
  • hij/zij/het doet
  • wij doen
  • jullie doen
  • zij doen

Of course there are also irregular verbs in present tense.
