Although both of the following sentences mean “I ate the entire piece of cake,” is there a nuanced difference between them? Or do these sentences always mean exactly the same thing?
1) Ik heb heel het stuk taart op.
2) Ik heb het hele stuk taart op.
As a native American-English speaker, my “language sense” suggests different translations of the sentences above:
1) I ate the piece of cake whole. (Meaning that I ate the entire piece of cake, but I put it into my mouth all at once, in one single bite.)
2) I ate the entire piece of cake. (Meaning that I ate every bit of the piece of cake, regardless of how many bites I took.)
Also, is it odd to say “Ik heb het hele stuk taart opgegeten” instead of “Ik heb het hele stuk taart op”?
Hi Jean, no I don't sense that there is a difference between the two. Other example: 1) Ik heb heel de vakantie op het strand gelegen 2) Ik heb de hele vakantie op het strand gelegen. I don't feel a difference.
And it is OK to say "ik heb het heel stuk taart opgegeten". "Ik heb het op" is just a shorter way to say "Ik heb het opgegeten". Just like "Ik heb het uit", is short for "ik heb het uitgelezen."
Hope this helps!
